Article is devoted to the practical implementation of the synthesis of media criticism and media education in the learning process of pupils and students in Australia. The article assesses the current state of and prospects for the integration of media criticism and media education in the context of current trends in the development of media literacy in Australia. Australian media education has identified the following key areas of movement of media education: the role of media in the representation of different social groups and the democratization of the media. At the same time the aim of leading media education becomes not a mechanical learning and skills training and the creation of conditions in which media literacy would become a process, developing over a lifetime.

Synthesis of Media Education and Media Criticism: the Results of the Formative Experiment with Students

Abstract: The article presents the results identify the levels of development of indicators of media competence of students of the two universities. The determination of the level of media competence of students of the control (Taganrog Institute of Management and Economics) and experimental groups (Anton Chekhov Taganrog Institute) relied on testing; written and creative work; discussions; the results of practice-oriented tasks. Re-identification of levels of development of indicators of media competence determined the stagnation of the students of control group of the Taganrog Institute of Management and Economics and positive dynamics in the experimental group of students of the Anton Chekhov Taganrog Institute. The positive dynamics of indicators of media competence based on the following factors: the implementation of a range of activities for students, synthesizing the media critic and media education; a range of tasks aimed at improving the cognitive interest of students, develop their active position in relation to the incoming channels of the media information; use different types of analysis of media texts.
