On October 20-22, 2009 there was the All-Russian conference ‘Education and Society’ in the Academy of Labor and Social Relations, and there were round tables with participation of leading representatives of Russian sociological science. The Conference was devoted to 20-year jubilee of the Russian Sociological Society. The round table on methodology was focused on actual theoretical and scientific-practical issues of development of sociology of education as one of the most important branches of sociological science as a whole. Chair of the Program Committee of the Conference Doctor of Sociology D.D. Konstantinovskiy leaded the discussion. The material was prepared by Doctor of Philosophy I.E. Zadorozhnyuk (Modern University for the Humanities) and PhD in Sociology E.I. Pronina (Institute of Sociology of the Russian Academy of Sciences).

Education and mentality within moving forces of a society development

The most important one of two moving forces of social development is represented as changes in elite and mass mentality, which create constructive stress in the system ‘culture – social relations’. Education stimulates social development through strengthening of innovative component of mass mentality, development of professional mentality and spirit elite’s mentality.

The results of experimental research of age structure and gender distribution of teaching staff in Ukhta State Technical University (USTU) are represented; sociological interpretation of its results is given and measures of optimization of staff fulfillment of a university are proposed. Specific of USTU as a north university in comparison with other universities of the region is set.

A process of educational reforming in Kazakhstan and adaptation of the system of staff training to a new social and economic environment are shown. In order to solve this task there are state programs of development of education in Kazakhstan. Importance of the issue of morality and spirituality in the process of professional training and development of middle class as a social group is stated. Correlations between a level of education and a level of income are analyzed.

Comparative Analysis of American and Russian Models of Education

Genesis of the problem of university management within the context of considered American and Russian models of higher professional education is analyzed. Comparative characteristics of these models are given; their disadvantages are shown. The most wide-spread types of universities are considered; American model of education is a symbiosis of two models: a continental and Atlantic one. Development of Russian model of education is characterized as a transition from German model based on fundament of scientific research to an American one.

Modern State and Tendencies of Development of Education in South African Countries

The article gives characteristic of education systems of some countries of the Southern Africa from primary to high levels. It shows the problems facing to these countries in sphere of education, and probably ways of the decision of these problems. The analysis of development of education is given on a background of the common unsatisfactory social, economic and political condition in the majority of the considered states. These negatives define the crisis in the field of education.
